Hektoen Enteric (HE) Agar is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation and differentiation of enteric pathogens, particularly Salmonella and Shigella species, which are responsible for a wide range of serious gastrointestinal infections.
The medium is also suitable for the recovery of other Gram-negative members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Its selective properties inhibit Gram-positive organisms, while its differential components allow clear distinction based on carbohydrate fermentation and hydrogen sulfide production.
